A Wonderfully Colourful South Farm Wedding

Being a Wedding photographer in Cambridge is a wonderful privilege that affords me the opportunity to shoot at some truly beautiful Cambridgeshire wedding venues. Today’s venue is definitely no exception, a South Farm wedding  is always a true joy to shoot and South Farm is a wedding venue I never tire of visiting.

Arriving for a South Farm Wedding, It’s always surprising how quiet, peaceful and serene everything is ahead of a big day of wedding celebrations at South Farm. The rustic Cambridgeshire wedding venue’s fab staff are so organised that everyone is quietly getting on with the preparations is a perfectly calm and professional manor.

It always feels that, although there are so many weddings at South Farm every single year, each and every wedding is treated as though it is the most important that the venue have ever hosted.

A super colourful South Farm Wedding

The bride at today’s South Farm wedding (Nicki)  is an art therapist, and was determined to let her creativity and love of colour shine through in every aspect of the day. She certainly succeeded in doing so. This August wedding ceremony took place outside with the backdrop of South Farm’s gorgeously picturesque buildings in the background making my job as a Cambridge Wedding photographer easy.

The beautifully adorned barn provided the a wonderfully colourful reception and (later in the day) dance floor.  To cap off a perfect wedding day, we were blessed with a gorgeous August golden hour to capture some wonderful, natural portraits around one of Cambridgeshire’s premier wedding venues.

Capturing moments of magic here is easy with South Farm’s beautifully maintained buildings providing an always providing an aesthetically pleasing backdrop.

South Farm Wedding Venue

South Farm is a well-known wedding venue located in the heart of the Cambridgeshire countryside, on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, near the village of Shingay-cum-Wendy just outside of the market town of Royston. It is a family-run working farm that has been converted into a rustic, yet elegant, venue for weddings and events.

South Farm Wedding Venue: History

The history of South Farm dates back several centuries, with the main farmhouse and outbuildings reflecting a mix of Tudor and Georgian architecture. It has been in the hands of the same family for several generations and was originally an arable farm before it transitioned into a sought-after wedding venue. The family preserved many of the historical features, such as the timber-framed barn and the period details of the farmhouse, while also adding modern amenities.

South Farm Wedding Venue: Location

Situated in picturesque, rural Cambridgeshire, South Farm offers a peaceful, secluded setting while still being accessible from London (about 50 miles away) and major cities in the East of England. The venue is surrounded by beautiful gardens, orchards, and open farmland, providing couples with a serene countryside atmosphere. The grounds are home to a variety of animals, including rare breed pigs, chickens, and peacocks, adding to the venue’s charm and uniqueness.

Why It’s Popular with Couples

South Farm is popular with couples for several reasons:

  • Versatile Settings: The venue offers multiple options for ceremonies, both indoor and outdoor, including the beautifully restored Tudor Barn, a chic Drawing Room in the farmhouse, or the outdoor Garden Summerhouse, perfect for a garden wedding.
  • Exclusivity: South Farm guarantees exclusive use of the venue, allowing couples and their guests to enjoy the space without interruption.
  • Eco-Friendly & Farm-to-Table Ethos: The farm operates sustainably and offers organic, homegrown produce in its catering. The “farm-to-table” ethos is a key selling point for couples looking for an eco-conscious venue with high-quality, fresh cuisine.
  • Accommodation: South Farm provides accommodation for guests, including rooms in the farmhouse and charming gypsy caravans for a quirky, romantic touch.
  • Bespoke Service: Couples appreciate the tailored service South Farm provides, helping them create a wedding that reflects their personality and style.

Why Wedding Photographers Love It

South Farm is a favourite among wedding photographers because:

  • Scenic Backdrops: The stunning, well-manicured gardens and orchards provide photographers with natural, scenic backdrops for both candid and posed shots.
  • Architectural Beauty: The venue’s mix of historical architecture (Tudor barns and Georgian farmhouse) adds a sense of grandeur and timelessness to wedding photos.
  • Golden Hour Magic: The expansive, open fields surrounding the venue allow for beautiful “golden hour” shots, where the soft evening light enhances the romantic ambiance of the day.
  • Diverse Settings: Photographers can capture a variety of scenes, from rustic farm views and lush greenery to elegant indoor settings with vintage charm, giving them plenty of creative options.

Overall, South Farm combines a perfect blend of rural beauty, history, and modern amenities, making it a popular choice for weddings and events.
