Sally & Eddy | An Elegant Ely Cathedral Wedding with a Relaxed Reception at The Red Lion, Soham
There are some weddings that feel effortlessly stylish from beginning to end, and Sally and Eddy’s beautiful Ely Cathedral wedding was exactly that.
With both Sally and Eddy working as performers and musicians, having first met whilst studying at drama school, their wedding day was filled with creativity, personality and a wonderful sense of celebration. Set against the stunning backdrop of Ely Cathedral before continuing to a relaxed reception at The Red Lion in Soham, it was a day that perfectly balanced timeless elegance with genuine warmth and fun.
Getting Ready in the Heart of Ely
The day began at a charming Airbnb just a short walk from Ely Cathedral.
The weather could not have been better. Warm sunshine filled the streets of Ely from early morning and created the perfect atmosphere as friends and family gathered in anticipation of the ceremony.
Sally looked effortlessly elegant in a beautifully tailored satin wedding gown. Clean lines, understated styling and a timeless silhouette gave the look a distinctly editorial feel. Eddy provided the perfect contrast in a classic black tie tuxedo, bringing a touch of old Hollywood sophistication to the day.
A Grand Ceremony at Ely Cathedral
As an Ely Cathedral wedding photographer, it is always a privilege to work within one of the country’s most spectacular wedding venues.
The scale and grandeur of Ely Cathedral never fail to impress. The soaring architecture, incredible light and centuries of history create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Cambridgeshire.
Surrounded by family and friends, Sally and Eddy exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony beneath the magnificent cathedral ceilings. The setting was breathtaking, yet the focus remained firmly on the connection between the couple and the people who had gathered to celebrate with them.
Confetti, Sunshine and Cathedral Portraits
Following the ceremony, guests gathered outside the cathedral where a fantastic confetti moment unfolded in front of the historic west entrance.
With locals enjoying the sunshine on a busy Saturday afternoon, there was a real sense of occasion as Sally and Eddy made their way through a tunnel of cheers, laughter and flying confetti.
We also took advantage of the beautiful cathedral surroundings for a large group photograph before exploring the perimeter grounds for portraits of the newlyweds.
My approach to wedding portraits is always relaxed and unobtrusive. Rather than awkward posing or forced smiles, I focus on creating space for genuine interaction and authentic connection. The result is a collection of images that feel stylish and editorial whilst remaining completely natural to the couple themselves.
The warm afternoon light and stunning cathedral backdrop provided the perfect setting.
A Relaxed Reception at The Red Lion, Soham
Guests travelled to The Red Lion in Soham by bus while Sally and Eddy enjoyed a few quiet moments together before joining the celebrations.
Arriving to a warm welcome from friends and family, the couple were greeted in the pub garden where a beautiful marquee had been set up for the reception.
The atmosphere throughout the afternoon was wonderfully relaxed. Conversations flowed easily, glasses were raised and guests made the most of the sunshine as the celebrations continued.
Speeches, Music and Unexpected Surprises
Given the couple’s musical backgrounds, it was perhaps no surprise that entertainment played a significant role throughout the day.
The speeches were among the highlights of the afternoon, blending humour, emotion and plenty of memorable stories from family and friends.
Guests were also treated to a surprise musical performance which brought the marquee to life and perfectly reflected Sally and Eddy’s shared love of performance and creativity.
These unscripted moments are often some of the most memorable parts of a wedding day and a joy to capture.
An Evening of Music, Dancing and Celebration
As the sun began to set, the celebrations moved seamlessly into the evening.
A lively Liverpool and Irish folk band provided the soundtrack for a fantastic ceilidh, filling the dance floor from the very first song.
The musical theme continued with a wonderful fiddle performance from Sally herself before she later treated guests to a vocal performance, creating a series of genuinely personal moments that reflected who Sally and Eddy are as a couple.
The result was an evening that felt less like a formal wedding reception and more like one big gathering of family, friends and musicians celebrating together.
